(from left) Chrystal (Abbey Lee), Patricia (Nikki Amuka-Bird), Jarin (Ken Leung), Maddox (Thomasin McKenzie), Charles (Rufus Sewell), Mid-Sized Sedan (Aaron Pierre), Prisca (Vicky Krieps) and Guy (Gael García Bernal) in Old, written for the screen and directed by M. Night Shyamalan.

A kind of Twilight Zone episode on accelerated old age !

A trip to a paradise island will turn into a nightmare for a couple in crisis who come with their children to spend one last moment with a "united" family! The hotel manager will invite them to be dropped off on an isolated beach, a sort of resort for "selected guests". But when the 4 protagonists join a handful of "happy chosen" tourists, strange phenomena occur. Children age at high speed, they go from 6, then 11 and 16 in a few hours ... What happens? Let us be clear from the outset "Old" is not the nanar announced by many media on social networks and it is not either a masterpiece or at least a film mastered from start to finish. Because we must recognize a quality in M Night Shyamalan is its ability to create an atmosphere and intrigue the viewer with initial postulates or phenomena that arouse curiosity. It is the keeping of the story and the explanation of the initial premise that often fails. "Old" is no exception, the first 20 minutes of exposure are successful. It is when the machine is launched, the stakes identified and the key to the enigma still far away that normally things are spoiled with the director of Indian origin! Here, then, "Old" starts well, hovers, skates, goes nuts and catches up "on the edge" and the home stretch with a clever twist and referring to a certain societal criticism. The epilogue can be interpreted, beyond its twist, as a reminder of the limits not to be crossed and sometimes the existence of die-hard & mercantile "politicians". (Is this a subliminal referral to research and the pharmaceutical industry in a time of a pandemic? This schizophrenic question does not call for an immediate answer!) Old age is inevitable, it can also be a source of fear for many human beings, especially in rich and industrialized societies, and its inexplicable acceleration could have created a feeling of terror and dread. M Night Shyamalan does not really manage to instill this feeling of horror, certainly children grow up, we are challenged, but adults do not seem to suffer the same biological shock. He could also have supported a more "fable" side. Technically the director multiplies the effects of "foreground-background", zoom ... Either he is happy and tell the audience, see how I "film well" or he tries to establish or accentuate by his parties took formal a certain way of apprehending his characters & of instituting a particular climax. M Night Shyamalan delivers a film with an intriguing opening that must be received as an episode of the Twilight Zone mixed with a "little" hint of Hitchcock. In summary it is not completely finished but it remains entertaining without reaching the heights hoped for in terms of exploitation of the original material. Note that "Old" is the adaptation of "Sand Castle", a graphic novel written by a Frenchman Pierre Oscar Levy & drawn by a Swiss Frederik Peeters. If audiences expect a great, immersive and horrifying film, she will be bound to be disappointed. Nevertheless "Old" had a good time despite some facilities and inconsistencies. The actors do the job without really breaking the screen. It is difficult to recognize Vicky Krieps seen at Paul Thomas Anderson with "Phantom Thread". This "popcorn movie" made an honorable score in the US and French Box Office. M Night Shyamalan will not hit the jackpot like for "Glass" his previous film, which he had financed with his own money and which had broken the house. He has re-committed his personal money to the production of "Old", he will recoup his expenses and even make a profit !!! The bet has been won to shoot a film in the midst of a pandemic and release it with restrictions still present, necessarily limiting the rate of market penetration and the number of spectators!
Not completely successful but entertaining !
